Assignment 3: proposal

3mw proposal

In my 3mw documentary I would like to focus a lot on the visual side of the documentary, creating a good idea for the viewer what great Yarmouth is like and looking at the history of the town, what it used to be like.
Part of my idea for the documentary is also to shoot in both night and day around the town, to show the comparison between the two. I believe doing this will show a vast difference between night and day which is why I want to do this.
I also want to look into the history of Great Yarmouth and show what it used to be like, then use this as a comparison to what Great Yarmouth looks like in 2016.
I am looking to create more of an observational documentary with some but not much dialogue. The focus is more on filming and editing to create an effective video.

My idea is to document the town of great Yarmouth during both night and day and create a visual comparison between the two to show the difference between both times. The second idea I had is to research into and document the history of the town. In researching the history of the town I will conduct interviews with people to discuss the history of the town and talk about the changes the town has made in recent years as well as further back in history.
My documentary will be more of an observational format and will fall into the special interest genre. The target audience for my documentary will be pretty much anyone.
The aim of the documentary is to show a comparison between different times of the day in the town and also to document the history of the town. My plan is to document the towns history in chronological order to show the history of the town as it happened to some extent.
In terms of locations for filming, I am looking to film in a few locations in great Yarmouth. Firstly, I want to film in the town centre both night and day, and then film along the seafront also both night and day. I will not need to travel far to get to these locations which makes filming a lot easier for me.
As far as other people’s involvement in the documentary, I will need maybe around two to three people to take part to be interviewed for the video. In the interview I will mainly ask about the history of the town which will help me to document the history of the town with more detail. Also I feel interviewing people will help add more dialogue to the video and more talking, as without this the video would have very little dialogue which is not what I am aiming for.
In terms of filming and crew I shouldn’t need anyone else to help with filming as the filming process should be very straight forward. I have my own camera but may need other equipment before I film such as a tripod and a microphone to capture the sound with more clarity. This is all the equipment I should need before filming. My main focus in the film is the visual comparison between night and day of the town. I am more focused on the visual element of the video in general as opposed to the audio side as I am not planning to add much dialogue aside from interviews.

Assignment 3: Research

3MW research For my 3-minute wonder style documentary I am going to make an observational style documentary which will focus on the history of great Yarmouth and I also plan to show a comparison between night and day of the town. For my video I want to interview some people who live in the town and get their opinions on the town currently and its history. My main focus for the documentary is to look at the history of the town and show the changes the town has made over the years. A direct comparison between Great Yarmouth from the late 19th century to now shows a massive difference as you would expect, this is something I want to include in my documentary and I also want to include stills to display the changes that the town has made over time. The photos below show the changes Great Yarmouth seafront has made from the early 20th century to now and this is the idea I want to incorporate into my documentary. As far as documenting the difference between night and day, my idea for this came from my interest in seeing the comparison. This is an idea that I have seen used in other people work and I found it interesting when seeing the comparison between the same place at different times and that it shows a different side to the same place. In my documentary I want to film in daytime certain areas of Great Yarmouth and film the same areas during the night. I also have thought about the idea of creating a short time lapse video but I am not sure about whether I will be able to do this at the moment.

Assigment 2:TV Advert Analysis

TV advert analysis The TV advert is for a new range of sure deodorant for men. The ad is being made to draw a new audience to the product and to appeal to a new crowd of people who will want to buy the product. The advert is a stand-alone video with the intention to make people aware that this is the best product of its type on the market. The style of the advert is humorous in the way that we tried to get the message across and appeal to the target audience we had in mind. In filming we tried to vary our use of camera angles and use as many as we could when we filmed. In editing we also used stills and text on screen to display the new slogan at the end of the advert. In the advert we tried to appeal to the target audience by creating a humorous and interesting style of advert which would hopefully draw the viewer in and convince them of this being the best product of its kind that you can get. The advert follows AIDA in that we are trying to create interest from the viewer and promote action by giving the example of an athlete using the product in our advert. Lighting wasn’t an issue when filming as the room we filmed in was already well lit. the problems that occurred were more in the capturing sound as the microphone we used for filming didn’t pick up the audio as well as we would have hoped. Also, another problem with the audio occurred when we began the editing process as we planned to use background music, but this slightly drowned out the audio of the dialogue in the film. Overall after changing the levels of the audio we got around this problem in the end. We used various camera angles in the filming process which was mainly a mix of long shots, close ups and side view shots. We also took a still shot of the product we rebranded to use at the end of the advert. In the still shot of the advert we also added text on screen which was the new slogan for the product. As our advert was based around sports and our target audience being mainly athletes we decided to shoot the advert in the changing rooms at college. We also dressed as athletes to create the impression more of who this product is best for. Creating the feel of a sports setting as much as we could in the video was important for us especially for us to appeal to the target audience. When editing the video, it was important to make sure there were no problems with continuity and also was important to make sure the audio was clear enough after adding background music. Also, when editing we had to cut certain parts of filming from the video as the video would have been too long with all shots included. Fortunately, after cutting certain shots from the film it didn’t affect the continuity in the advert. We didn’t add any sounds effects to the video so all the audio, aside from the background music, is what we captured when filming which is all dialogue.

Assignment 3 An Introduction To The News

An introduction to the news

The starting sequence is the familiar BBC sequence with backgrounds of London. These visuals have been used because it is relevant to the news setting and it is well known/familiar for the audience so that they know what news provider they are watching. Also by only using images of London it shows the viewer that the report is specific to the London area. The audio is also backing up the familiarity of the BBC starting sequence as it’s a recognisable track.

The stories covered include the pending EU result and what effect it will have on our economy, lives and our future. Also can some small companies benefit from leaving the EU, and the choices some members of parliament will have to make considering heath row airport and also the matter of avoiding buying fake tickets for Wimbledon and lastly is the weather for the next few days. I think they start with the EU referendum as its one of the most important things in our lives at the moment even if it isn't specific to London. By finishing with the news they keep the attention of the viewer throughout the program as most people want to watch the weather most and this is specific to their area. Therefore, their layout of their stories is done in such a way as to keep the audience’s attention for longer and they can do this because they are aiming at adults of the A, B and C1 demographic mostly however it is watched but others. But the language used is more suited to this demographic.

The main news reader was Riz Lateef. The political correspondent was Carl Mercer. Tom Edwards; the transport correspondent and Elizabeth Ristenie was their weather reporter all these people need to show a great deal of skills such confidence in themselves and what they are saying/doing, knowledge in their topics and backgrounds, ability to criticize people and not be afraid to do so. Finally, keeping calm under pressure of the job, being on camera (possibly live) and the pressure not to mess up.

Assignment 3: 3MW - Research Of Different Documentary Styles

Research of different documentary styles

Within film making there are 6 different styles of filming. Observational, reflexive, poetic, expository, participatory and performative. My documentary will be more of an observational style, with some but very little dialogue included in the piece.

An observational documentary focuses more on what you see than on what you hear in the video, I personally feel that if done well, this type of documentary can be the most effective, which is why I have chosen this style to base my own documentary on.

A performative documentary focuses more on the subject point and the emotional aspect of what the documentary is about. Also, this type of documentary can play on the meaning of the piece and the meaning can sometimes be more subjective to the viewer and the viewer can make their own opinion of the documentary which I am a big fan of.

A reflexive documentary shows more of the constructive nature of the documentary and almost happens as it goes along. A lot of the behind the scenes work is often visible to the viewer watching the video.

A poetic documentary usually is very personal in subject to the people involved in the documentary and usually emphasizes certain aspects of these people’s lives and focuses on it heavily. This can make for a more emotional style of documentary and can usually be more focused one thing as opposed to other styles of documentaries.

A participatory documentary style usually features the filmmaker in the film and usually involves an interview between the filmmaker and the subject of the documentary. Usually in this style of documentary the filmmaker is influences the situation and events which are involved in the documentary.

Assignment 3: 3MW Research

3MW research

The first 3MW documentary I found to look at is on the enbtecmedia YouTube channel. The video is titled “Lowestoft” and focuses on the town, its land and the residents within Lowestoft. The reason I liked this video is because it relates to the topic my 3MW will be about. The video includes interviews with people talking about the area and mores so discusses what the area now lacks as opposed to recent years. The scenes in this video which show the area of Lowestoft are what I will take inspiration from as in my own documentary I would like to not only just discuss great Yarmouth as a town but show the area to the viewer and explain the history of the town as it is displayed. I have decided to make video documenting the changes between night and day in my town of great Yarmouth, and documenting parts of the history of the town and comparing the differences and changes the town has made over the years up until now. As this video I first spoke about focuses on a particular town and discusses parts of its history, this is something I feel I can take ideas from, though I would still like to create more of an observational style of documentary with little dialogue. The shots in the earlier discussed video are something I would like to incorporate into my own video as I feel this gave off a good idea in the video of what Lowestoft looks like and what kind of town it is. The style of this documentary is very similar to what I would like to create.

The second 3MW documentary I found that liked is titled “heavy addiction” and it documents people who are obsessed with bodybuilding. The reason I like this documentary is for its style. The video consists mainly of both interview footage and footage of what these people do on a regular basis. I also feel like this is a subject which is very interesting and seeing and hearing from the people in this documentary adds intrigue as they discuss why they are so obsessed with what they do. I take inspiration from this video as I find it is a very raw and revealing documentary. This is something I would like to incorporate into my own work.

The third 3MW documentary I found is titled “100”. This 3MW documents a woman’s life as she turns 100. One the main things I like about this 3MW is the fact that it has a reflective quality in that it looks back on history and shows old photos in the video. The reason I like this about the documentary is because it makes you think and gives off a better impression of who this person is and their history.

Assignment 2: TV advert evaluation

TV Advert Evaluation

Our chosen product as a group was sure for men deodorant. We decided on this as the product to base the TV advert on from my rebranding prezi. As a group we felt this was the best idea to go with when creating the TV advert. The current target audience for the product was really anyone, in rebranding the product we decided to aim this product at a sportier and athletic crowd because the product seemed to fit that audience.
In rebranding we felt that we reached the target audience well with the TV advert we filmed. I feel we made it clear in the advert who our target audience was with the dialogue and the way we shot the advert. Also we used the slogan “bring out the inner athlete” which shows clearly who our target audience was at the time.
We feel the advert was very effective in what we were trying to achieve and who we were trying to reach out to. The advert was shot in the changing room at college to give more of a sporty feel to the advert. With this we felt that we were giving off the right effect to people watching and that it would appeal to the more athletic viewer.
Being in such a small space to shoot the advert we did find it difficult to incorporate a wider range of shot types but we did include as much as we could such as long, medium and short range shots along with focusing shots and different angles.
In editing the video, we tried to cut down on the length of the video as it was original over a minute long. After doing this we focused mainly on continuation in the video and adding things like text in the video and backing music which we completed towards the end of the whole process of editing the video.
The idea of reaching the target audience for us in the advert was mainly to suggest that this is the best or at least amongst the best products of its kind for what it is used for. We worked on the storyline and dialogue of the video very early on before filming.
The message we are trying to send with the advert is that our target audience should buy this product as it works better than any other product of its king. The message is that for our particular target audience, there isn’t a better product on the market at the moment.
I feel that the advert has a professional look, achieving this was made a lot easier because of the equipment used. For this advert we used a high quality microphone to capture audio in the advert. We used camera stabilising equipment to avoid shaky shots. In using good quality equipment to film I feel this helped us massively to achieve a more professional looking advert and an all-round higher quality end product. The advert is very family friendly and does comply with the BCAP code.

Upon reflection, I feel the advert as a final product is very close to how I personally wanted and expected it to be. The original idea was to aim the product entirely at the new audience as much as we could with an athletic and sport-style setting. As far as editing and the overall quality of the audio and video my expectations were exceeded. I feel a big part of the final product as a whole is having a professional look and feel to it. Using high quality equipment for the advert was a huge help to us I feel as we achieved a much more professional looking advert. Also looking at our preparation for the advert before filming I feel we did a good job in planning what we were going to do in terms of shot types and dialogue in the storyboards and production schedule. If I were to redo this task, there isn’t much I would change. However, I do feel that we could have put more effort into the setting for the advert as there were some problems we faced with filming in such a small space where other people were coming in out to use the room also. Another issue I felt was with the dialogue, we could have added a more detailed dialogue to the advert. The dialogue in the advert was the area in the production where I felt we lacked most.

As far as my own involvement in the production I feel I contributed well in the filming and pre-production process but I feel that I could have contributed more in the editing process. In terms of contributing ideas to the production we all contributed well and discussed many different ideas with each other. As a whole I feel we worked very well as a team and also worked very efficiently with the time frame we were given to complete the production.

William Hesketh lever was the original founder of Unilever in the late 19th century. William Hesketh lever was also the founder of the Lever bros before it eventually became Unilever. Unilever wasn’t formed until the 1930’s.
The first product Lever produced a new soap product which promoted personal hygiene in the 19th century. In the early 1900’s the company were mainly producing products like margarine and soaps, later expanding into the food market in the 1940’s. 40 years later the company was considered as one of the biggest in the world, mostly due to their expansion into different markets leading them to further success.
In the later 1990’s the company would expand into central and eastern Europe, though they were continuing to focus on fewer products, a decision they had made in the late 1880’s.
Unilever Logo This is the company’s current logo.

In the 21st century the company has focused on all new types of products and working with different brands, mainly in products that help people look good and feel good.
Unilever is currently working with brands such, pro activ, flora, and sure, all products aimed at healthcare and personal hygiene. In recent years Unilever has focused more and more on everyday household products, it would be hard to find a product or brand which they work with that you wouldn’t recognise. Most of the products and brands which Unilever work with are centred around food, home care and personal health care.
Below are some images of the brands which Unilever currently works with.

Blog Report For Pre Production Process

Blog report for the pre-production process

Over the course of 3 weeks in a group of 3 we created our own 90 second short film to be uploaded as a Depict! entry. We were given a budget which was funded by the college but we decided against cutting into the budget as we really didn’t feel the need to, throughout filming and production there were no financial expenditures made and the equipment we used to film, produce and edit (camera, tripod, editing software) was also all provided by the college. In a big Hollywood film they would also have a set budget to produce the film, the budget would be typically large and would cover every financial expenditure in the films production. We were given a 3-4 week timeframe to complete filming and editing, in our group we finished this all within the timeframe given. In a professional made film the timeframe in which they would have to create the movie would typically be much longer and it wouldn’t matter too much if they went over the timeframe to finish the film, in these types of production the focus is more so on getting everything right.
Our group was a group of 3 but we used some other people to help us film as we didn’t have enough people to film at certain points in making the film, we used some students from our own class to help us film as we needed more characters/extras to be in the film. In bigger productions they would hire extras to be a part of the production if they needed. We used the W block in college and the pathway outside the front of the college as our filming location, all of our filming took place in these 2 areas. Normally in bigger productions the shooting is done in several locations but as we were only shooting a 90 second short film we felt no need to use any other locations for filming. The size of our team for this production was very small compared to what you see in other bigger productions. We had a team of three to film, edit and produce the final product, which is a huge contrast when you compare that number to the amount of people involved in a Hollywood film. The amount of personnel involved in a bigger production is so large as there are so many more things that need to be done in these kind of productions and so many more finer details to be catered to, in our production we didn’t really have the need for any more people to be involved in the production aside from extras in filming. In terms of budgeting for larger productions, it can come from several different sources. For example, in a BBC production the budget for each program is funded by the taxpayer. In another example, some smaller productions will set up a Kickstarter page which is where their production is funded by donations to the page. Some other productions are self-funded.
Before filming the production we drew up storyboards and wrote up a shot list detailing what we would film, which type of shot it would be, where and when we would film each shot and included the dialogue for what was happening in each individual shot in the storyboards. This was helpful and essential to have before we filmed as we would have had no organisation when filming otherwise. Bigger productions in the professional industry would typically do the same as what we did but with much more detail as well as writing up a script, which is something we merged into the story board.
In our production we filmed in and outside college, as we were doing this we needed to get location recce forms filled in and signed as well as risk assessment sheets to address any health and safety risks we might have encountered whilst filming. In our production
Our production is a 90 second short film detailing the modern world and social media. Our production was made to be uploaded and distributed to our media blogs and to be uploaded to the depict website as a short film entry. We had to obtain release forms before making the film in order to be able to film with permission from the college, whose location it was we were using to film the project.
For a moving image text there are many things that may require financial expenditures, there are sources of funding for things such as travel expenses and props. Filmmakers tend to have a budget for their productions, which covers every financial expense they make in the process of making the final product. For a TV show that is broadcasted by a company such as the BBC all the budget they have for TV shows is funded by the tax payer.
In our production there were not many contributors as it was such a small production, larger productions will generally have a much larger list of contributors to the production which would be needed in many more areas. A larger production has more contributors behind the scenes as opposed to a smaller production.
When putting together a production there is also a lot of legal requirements involved, for example you need to get permission and clearance for the locations in which you choose to use for the production. Also there are things like insurance on things like the equipment you use in the production.
In a typical production the producers will set a deadline in which they wish to complete the production, this is an important part of a production as without a deadline the production may take much longer to complete as there is no time in which they hope to complete the production. Having a deadline acts as a guideline to help with the production in a similar way to having storyboards and a script before filming, it gives an idea and a clear vision of how they want the final product and when they want it.
Sources of finance in a production can come from many places, for example some productions are funded by the tax payer, which would be mostly be considered a higher budget production as opposed to a production funded by a Kickstarter project, which depending of the budget you receive can be a high or low budget production. Typically, a project like this is a low budget production.
Our production was distributed through YouTube, then embedded to our blogs and then uploaded as a depict entry on their website. We completed the production before the deadline we were set, this allowed us to add some finishing touches after.
You can only distribute your work if you have the clearance for it, this means that you must have permission to use everyone and everything in the production you have made. You must have permission/clearance in any production otherwise you would not have permission to produce and distribute the work.
Public liability insurance for a production is very important in any production as it protects the health of the people in the production and anyone else should they suffer injury or health issues. This covers the cost of any legal expenses. You would need this in most productions as it is a basic form of protection in your production should anyone get injured or suffer any health issues.
A completion guarantee is useful especially in independently financed films. A completion guarantee is a form of insurance offered by a completi0on guarantor company in exchange for a fee which guarantees the production will be completed in time.
Copyright issues were not really a problem with our production as we used copyright free music in the film. This is the main issue we would have had with our production if we had chosen different music in the background. Copyright is a legal right which grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution. This is what prevented us from using certain copyright music in our short film, meaning we had to search for and use copyright free music in the background of our production.
As far as all the equipment we used in our production, it was all borrowed from the college to make this short film. We used a DSLR camera to film and a tripod in most shots to provide more stability to the camera when filming and to allow us to position the camera better for different shots as well as allowing us all to be in certain shots if needed.
A regulatory body is a public authority which exercises authority over human activity in a regulatory or supervisory capacity. OFCOM is a communications regulator in the UK. They regulate broadcasting and telecommunications in the UK. The BBC is regulated by the office of fair trading. The BBC is also covered by OFCOM’s fairness code. The British board of film classification was founded in 1912 and is responsible for the censorship and classification of films within the United Kingdom.
A trade union is an organisation made of members who are usually workers. Their main aim is to protect the interest of its members in the workplace. The producer’s alliance for cinema and television (PACT) is a UK trade association for independent producers in cinematic or television productions. The broadcasting, entertainment, cinematograph and theatre union is a trade union in the UK which has over 25,000 members currently who mostly work in broadcasting, film and theatre, the union was founded in 1991.
A trade association is an organisation that is founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry.

The choice of location in our production was decided based on what was more convenient for us. we chose to only film in the college area as it benefited us more in the long run as opposed to going somewhere further away, this way we had all the time for filming and there were no issues getting permission to shoot on college grounds. Because of this it cut out any timing issues we could have faced, our decision to film around college saved us a lot time where otherwise we might have had to travel to a location every time we filmed a scene, instead we were pretty much already there which gave us more time to shoot.
